MGA Thermal is a scalable Long-Duration Energy Storage technology ready to address industrial heat and renewable storage applications.

How does it work

Our Thermal Energy Storage System (TESS) offers a scalable means of firming variable renewable generation into a highly reliable and versatile supply of process heat, heat & power (cogeneration) or steam for electricity generation. The system has minimal need for expensive capital equipment such as heat pumps and maximises utilitsation of pre-existing equipment and proven technologies. In the case for power station retrofits, the MGA Storage can plug into existing electricity generation infrastructure making for a seamless transition and ultra-low carbon energy storage.

Industrial Heat

Industrial heat is our core application. MGA Thermal offers a scalable means of firming variable renewable generation into a highly reliable and versatile supply of process heat. The system is more economical than the gas benchmark and has up to 48 hours of storage.

We can deliver steam or steam and electricity (co-generation) between 150°C and 600°C and can scale to GW thermal.

MGA can store intermittent renewable energy as heat, the heat is then converted back into electricity using a turbine. Storing massive amounts of energy to use when the sun isn’t shining and the wind isn’t blowing.

We address large-scale long-duration energy storage needs. Our smallest system is 5MWhs and we are working on designs up to 6 GWhs.

Energy 24/7

Unlike traditional energy storage solutions, our technology can simultaneously charge and discharge, enabling a continuous 24/7 discharge of renewable energy.

Efficient

We achieve an electricity-to-steam round trip efficiency as high as 93%. Any heat not delivered into steam via our heat recovery steam generators is re-circulated.

Simultaneous Charging & Discharging

The system can simultaneously charge and discharge, enabling a continuous 24/7 discharge of renewable energy.

Varied discharge-to-charge ratios allow asset operators to charge while the price is low, during times of high renewable energy generation and discharge when the price is high or during times of low energy production (i.e. arbitrage). It also means grid regulators can indicate desired power discharge, supporting the overall electricity grid.

MGA Thermal Energy Storage is flexible and suitable for either brown or greenfield sites, creating reliable, low-carbon energy storage.

Our patented MGA material

The MGA technology is a purpose-invented material called Miscibility Gap Alloy (MGA), which is manufactured as MGA Blocks. Our team are the global experts on MGA, having invented the material.

MGA Blocks store and deliver thermal energy while remaining outwardly solid.

  • The blocks are designed with two key materials. Tiny metal alloy particles are dispersed through a matrix material. These particles melt as the blocks are heated and energy is absorbed, while the matrix material remains solid and keeps the molten particles in place.

  • The energy is stored in the solid-to-liquid phase change and is released as the blocks cool and the particles become solid again.

  • MGA Blocks are used in Thermal Energy Storage Systems (TESS) which deliver continuous high temperature heat or electricity that is safe, low cost, sustainable and high capacity.
