MGA Thermal appoints ex-Shell Energy executive as CCO to accelerate industrial decarbonisation
Backed by a recent $17M capital injection, MGA Thermal has appointed Greg Fyffe as CCO to build its commercial engine, solving the heat trilemma for hard-to-abate industries — decarbonisation, cost-competitiveness and energy security.
Australian thermal energy storage developer MGA Thermal has appointed former Shell Energy executive Greg Fyffe as Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) to lead its commercial expansion into enterprise-scale decarbonisation. The strategic hire signals the company’s shift from technology development to the active displacement of carbon-intensive fossil fuels.
The appointment aligns with MGA Thermal’s expansion strategy following a $17M capital raise earlier this year dedicated to scaling its commercial capability and accelerating the market deployment of its proprietary thermal block technology.
As volatile gas prices, supply shortfalls and looming emissions penalties squeeze manufacturers, MGA Thermal’s newly expanded commercial division will focus on enabling heavy industry to displace fossil fuels with cost-competitive, electro-thermal energy storage (ETES) solutions.
Fyffe believes that while large-scale grid batteries dominate headlines, the next horizon of the energy transition lies in replacing fossil-fueled process heat. This abatement challenge has historically lacked a commercially viable solution.
"Accounting for roughly a quarter of global emissions, industrial process heat remains one of the most stubborn contributors because heavy manufacturing, chemical processing and mining operations rely on continuous, high-temperature steam that variable renewables cannot directly provide,” said Fyffe, CCO of MGA Thermal.
“Multinationals have traditionally viewed clean-tech alternatives as being either technically unproven or commercially unviable. MGA Thermal addresses this economic friction point by delivering scalable, flexible storage that achieves price parity with fossil fuels on a levelised cost of heat (LCOH) basis, allowing the industrial sector to decouple from fossil fuels without compromising reliability or increasing LCOH."

Exploring new commercial models for heavy industry
A key part of Fyffe's mandate will be exploring alternative commercial models that reduce barriers to adoption for heavy industrial customers — an area where long capital approval cycles and complex internal risk requirements have historically slowed the uptake of new technologies.
“Our focus is on developing commercial structures that address that economic friction point, giving industrial customers a pathway to decarbonise their process heat without compromising reliability or stretching their capital budgets,” said Fyffe.
This commercial thinking is already informing MGA Thermal's approach to its 200 megawatt-hour Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) study with global chemicals giant Tronox in Western Australia.
A proven track record for scaling climate-tech
Fyffe brings over 25 years of executive experience across energy markets, renewables, and deep-tech commercialisation.
Most recently at Shell Energy Australia, he led national sales across the commercial and industrial portfolio, expanding the energy solutions pipeline by more than 200% via novel Energy-as-a-Service models. Fyffe’s background also includes directing regional expansion for solar scale-up 5B and spending over a decade steering university spin-out Benthic into a global category leader ahead of a successful sale to KKR.
